In my cases it was product discontinuation, cost, and ready HD support. I suspect that most users will stick with the NLE they know, and make a change only if there is a compelling reason. My switch to Edius was delayed many months waiting for an offer.

Of interest to marketing types is that several of my changes were prompted by competitive upgrade offers. Have tried several versions of Pinnacle Studio (not stable with my systems), several Premiere Pro, considered the Avid offer then they killed Liquid, and the Avid studio offering that was sort of a dumbed-down Liquid, but none of them caught or held my interest. At that point I moved to Edius for reliable HDV support as the shortest relearning curve and have not looked back. When I jumped from linear (tape-to-tape) editing to NLE I used the software that was bundled with the analog capture hardware - starting briefly with some system (I forget what) followed by Premiere 5 and 6.x as bundled by Fast, then spent a year or two with Liquid, until Avid killed it. I mostly do event type projects, including some stuff for secondary school performances. That said, since the Fast/Pinnacle products are no longer made, I guess in the current landscape, that puts Edius in the #1 spot for active products. My absolute favorite by far was the Fast/Pinnacle family of products for many features that were well ahead of their time and still have not been replicated by others, but Edius is the defacto runner up. I personally bought into Edius in v7 for my own video work, when I could no longer keep going with my Liquid products due to hardware changes and codec changes. I used to be a reseller/system integrator/trainer of most of those products, except the Apple stuff, so I had to learn to use them and be able to train others.

I have used Premiere (v3-v6.5), Premiere Pro (v1 to current), in-Sync Speed Razor (v4-v5), in-Sync Blade, Ulead Media Studio, Incite/IMC Editor (versions up to about 3), Avid XpressDV/Media Composer/Symphony family (version numbers have reset several times), Avid/Soft Image DS (v11 if I recall correctly), Apple FCP v6-v7, FCPX, Fast Video Machine, Fast/Pinnacle Blue/Silver/Chrome/Purple/Edition/Liquid family (multiple versions, I missed the Fast 601, but it was the same as the Sony ES3 which I did use), Sony Xpri (v1), Sonic Foundry/Sony/Magix Vegas (v2-v14), and Edius (v3-v9).
